Birds in Belize

As I am sitting at home and doing nothing for Christmas and New Year, I thought I would take a trip down memory lane. Last year, we were in Belize around this time.....hiking and birding in the rain forests, swimming with sharks and stingrays (not kidding...real sharks and rays), snorkeling the Belize barrier reef, cave tubing on a Mayan river and ziplining from treetop to treetop like Tarzan. Oh....and the best of all - a warm flourless chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream!!

One of these days I will write a full post on this trip. Meanwhile here are some pretty pictures of birds. Unlike my Bhimashankar pictures, this is what you get when Saru is handling the camera.

Tropical King Bird (TK)

Cinnamon Becard

Common Road Hawk

Social Flycatcher

Vermillion Flycatcher

Fork Tailed Flycatcher

Northern Jacana

Bare Throated Tiger Heron

Jaiburu Stork

In case you are looking for pictures of that delicious mouthwatering chocolate lava cake, I am sorry I didn't take any. I was too busy drooling over it and then eating it:)

  3. Thanks hitch writer. I checked out your reply.

    Lakshmi,
Those vermillion flycatchers were all over the place near the lodge where we were staying. They were a little hard to photograph because they kept moving all the time.

Jabiru storks are supposed to be the largest bird in the new world. We kinda of got lucky with this sighting.

Thanks and do visit the site again.

    Kala,
I will write a full post one of these days and then put up zipling and cave tubing pictures

    Shantanu,
I think we saw and took these pictures in 2-3 days. I don't remember the number, but I think we saw 60+ species of birds.

    Ashes,
Thanks. Ever since he read this post, my husband has been craving that flourless chocolate cake. I need to look for a recipe and bake that one of these days. Then I will definitely take a picture.

  10. It is funny that I think people will like a certain picture and almost everybody points to a completely different one.
My favorite picture is that of the Tropical king bird although I can see the appeal of the vermilion flycatcher.....great color and a naughty look. It almost looks like it took a dip in a bucket of vermilion.

  16. I love the name of that Bare-throated tiger heron! We have vermillion flycatchers, fork-tailed flycatchers, tropical kingbirds and the social flycatcher here in AZ. I have also seen the Northern Jacuna in a town called Casa Grande. It comes to a pond on a golf course there every year. What a wonderful array of birds! And that dessert sounds so yummy!

  23. Do you know if the Social flycatcher the same bird that we refer to as the Great Kiskadee in South Texas? Or just a remarkable look-a-like?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Believe it's Gray-necked Wood Rail

    ReplyDelete
  25. You made a small mistake in the naming. Your Social Flycatcher is actually a Great Kiskadee and your Northern Jacana is a Gray-necked Wood-Rail (a lot more elusive a bird).

  26. Cinnamon Becard is a female Summer Tanager

  28. The 'social flycatcher' isn't one (rufous wings). I assume it's greater kiskadee.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, nor is the 'northern jacana'. It's a rail I foget the name of (grey-necked rail?).

    ReplyDelete
  30. And the 'becard' looks more like a tanager.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great pictures but I'm afraid you misidentified several species. Your Social Flycatcher is a Great Kiskadee (rufous wings). Your Cinnamon Becard is a Summer Tanager (huge bill). Your Northern Jacana is a Gray-necked Wood-rail.
